REALTY

If you have decided that you want to pursue a career in real estate you must take the licensing courses through the University of British Columbia (UBC) Real Estate Division. The first step in becoming licensed is to take the Real Estate Trading Services License Course at UBC. The course is completed by correspondence and consists of 20 multiple-choice assignments and a 3-hour final exam. You have one year to complete the course from date of registration.

Course content consists of subjects such as financial statements, mortgage finance, local taxation on real estate, building construction, law of mortgages, law of contracts, elements of appraisal, law of agency, title registration of land and local government.

Many people find the course quiet difficult due to high standards and the time commitment. They either drop out or are suspended for failure to meet the course requirements. Figures show that for every 100 people that register in the course only 63 finish the assignments and go on to write the exam. Of those 63 only 49 pass and are eligible to apply for a salesperson’s license.

On average, most students finish the course within six months provided they complete one assignment a week. Each assignment takes approximately 10 – 12 hours.

The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Commerce for Business Administration, in partnership with its real estate division provides all of the province’s (and most of Canada) real estate educational needs. These include the correspondence package mentioned above that helps prepare you to write the agent pre licensing exams. They also have a nationally recognized program that offers a Diploma in Urban Land Economics (DULE). Upon graduation from the DULE program you will have fulfilled the educational requirements for the REIBC.

UBC, The Real Estate Institute of BC (REIBC) and the Open Learning Agency (OLA) have, in cooperation, helped develop Canada’ first undergraduate distance education degree in Real Estate. This degree grows off UBC’s DULE program and you would graduate with a Bachelor of Business in Real Estate (BBRE). For more information visit: www.openingdoors.com

UBC also has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree program with a Real Estate option. This option will give you all the requirements for membership in the REIBC. Visit: www.opendoors.com
